Havering Athletics Club

Havering athletes won 2 gold and 4 silver medals at the Essex County XC Relay Championships at Gosfield School. The Senior Men successfully defended their title and the B team won silver. The club Senior Mixed quartet also won gold to retain their trophy. Silver medals were won by the senior women, U15G and U13G.

Long jumper Shandell Taylor is one of 30 athletes aged 16+ being supported by British Athletics as part of their 2018 Talented Athlete Sponsorship Scheme (TASS) which supports athletes as they move into the next phase of their athletics career. It provides a package of core support services worth in excess of £7,500 per athlete and a £500 funding grant. Shandell (18) won the English Schools title, broke the club long jump record set in 1964 by the great Fred Alsop, earning him a GB U20 international vest. 15 year old Somto Okpalauko won the London Athletics Young Volunteer Award and was shortlisted in the top 4 at the National Volunteer Awards. Somto is one of the club’s 8 Game Changer Young Volunteers, and during the year has volunteered at a wide range of events. 

Havering 90 Joggers/Parkrun

Members went to Bournemouth running distances from 5k to a full Marathon. All members very busy each weekend. Parkrun regularly get 200 at Hornchurch and 300 at Raphael’s with Sunday morning 2k 50-70 juniors.

A presentation was given to GP’s on health benefits of prescribing exercise such as Parkrun. A New Year’s Day run will be held at Raphael’s at 9am and another at 10:30 at Harrow Lodge, Hornchurch.
